Court to rehear law on adoptions of Native American children

(Kevin McGill | AP file photo) Tehassi Hill, tribal chairman of the Oneida Nation, stands outside a federal appeals court in New Orleans, after arguments on the constitutionality of a 1978 law giving Native American families preference in adoption of Native American children on March 13, 2019. A federal appeals court says it will take a second look at an emotionally fraught lawsuit governing the adoption of Native American children. In August, a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978. On Thursday, Nov. 7 the New Orleans-based court said a majority of its active judges have voted to re-hear the case.
